Odyssey - Ted Ed

Book 8

Today we need to discuss BOOK 8, recap Books 5-8, discuss your blogs and final and play vocabulary jam.

Your blog assignment for tomorrow will be to recap - summarize - what happens in Books 5-8.  List all the characters invovled.  List and explain a major theme and any symbols or allusions that
appeared.

Unit Learning goal: At the end of this unit, students will be able to show an understanding of the Odyssey as an Epic Poem by creating a video that lists the epic elements of the Odyssey, discusses how Odysseus fits the role of the Epic Hero, and summaries the book into six parts.

The Odyssey

Remember you need to read BOOK 4 today.  Your first blog assignment is as follows:

Write a summary for Books 1-4.  Give the summary a title that relates what these books are about.  Remember every 4-books revolve around one particular movement or story.  Then, list the major characters that appear in these books and the major theme of the books.  Also list any major symbols or literary elements.

1) What key god is absent from the assemby of gods at the beginning of the book?  Why is this important?
2) What might Homer's pupose be in having Zeus recall in such detail the story of Agamemnon, Clytemnestra, Aegisthos and Orestes?
3) How does Telemachos receive Athena, who has arrived disguised as Mentes?
4) What is Athena, Mentes, reaction to Telemachos plight?  What is her/his advice?
5) Discuss what the suitors are doing.
6) Discuss Penelope's appearance to the "party".
7) Discuss Antinoos and Eurymachos response to Telemachos.
